In March 2004, just as the insurgent movement strengthened, several members of one National Guard unit arrived in Iraq, with cameras. Straight from the front lines in Iraq, THE WAR TAPES is the first war movie filmed by soldiers themselves. Armed with minicams mounted on their gun turrets, helmets and dashboards, three National Guardsmen capture an unprecedented perspective of the Iraq war in this powerful documentary culled from more than 1,000 hours of footage. Deftly interlaced with harrowing film of ambushes, explosions and severed limbs are the soldiers' complex reactions to the conflict and interviews with the women they left behind.

Was the 2004 Election Stolen? »
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. / Rolling Stone
Republicans prevented more than 350,000 voters in Ohio from casting ballots or having their votes counted – enough to have put John Kerry in the White House.
Such results, according to the archive, provide virtually irrefutable evidence of vote miscount. No rigorous statistical explanation can explain the completely nonrandom disparities that almost uniformly benefited Bush. The final results are completely consistent with election fraud – specifically vote shifting.

What a Mean Mean Friend
We Have in Jesus
»
Joe Bageant
If a Muslim were to write an Islamic version of last book in the Left Behind series and publish it across the Middle East, Americans would go beserk. Yet tens of millions of Christians eagerly await and celebrate an End Time when everyone who disagrees with them will be murdered in ways that make Islamic beheading look like a bridal shower. Jesus – who apparently has a much nastier streak than we have been led to believe – merely speaks and "the bodies of the enemy are ripped wide open down the middle." In the book Christians have to drive carefully to avoid "hitting splayed and filleted corpses of men and women and horses" Even as the riders' tongues are melting in their mouths and they are being wide open gutted by God's own hand, the poor damned horses are getting the same treatment. Sort of a divinely inspired version of "Fuck you and the horse you rode in on."

This may be some of the bloodiest hate fiction ever published, but it is also what tens of millions of Americans believe is God's will.

The nexus of evangelical Christianity and Republican politics is a force that is transforming the United States, and not for the better. ... That's why the Founding Fathers made sure separation of church and state was put into the Constitution. They had enough knowledge of the religious extremists of their era to know that no faith or religious sect should be allowed to dominate a free people.

But the present-day Christian Right doesn't see it that way. Like the German church of the 1930s, they see our open, secular society and the principles of the Enlightenment it was based upon as evil, and see the people who believe in these principles as evil.

Too many liberals don't take the prospect of a fundamentalist theocracy seriously, or think that the Christian Right and its followers can be reasoned with. Unfortunately, reason is an impossibility when dealing with people who openly seek your destruction in the name of the God they believe in.

We saw it coming ...
Dennis Davis - 090705

We saw it coming. While our leadership was reposefully vacationing on ranches in Texas and Montana, or shopping for designer shoes, hi-tech satellite images were on our television sets giving us more than adequate warning of the impending doom of hurricane Katrina. What we didn’t see coming was help from our government to assure that those unfortunates that could not evacuate because of lack of transportation were granted equal protection. What we didn’t see coming in the wake of Katrina was five desperate days of pain, suffering and death perpetrated upon the beautiful people of Louisiana and Mississippi by the despicable inaction of leadership at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

It’s about time: time that is being wasted by allowing this administration to continue the destruction of our communities through their utter ineptitude. The ineptitude that would allow tens of thousands to perish from this earth unnecessarily must be repudiated. It’s about time that articles of impeachment are submitted to congress for this deadly failure of leadership. This is serious. This is no “blue dress” issue.

It’s time that we get rid of the failed leadership that allowed the lives and security of our nation’s people to be swept away. We owe it to the victims of this failed leadership and the American people and the world deserve better.

Let us rebuild and restore whole the homes of the survivors of hurricane Katrina. Let Katrina’s aftermath sweep away the leadership and deadly nonchalance that allowed this disaster to unnecessarily take the lives of so many unfortunate souls.

"(The US) used to stand for things that meant something," a longtime friend, a career soldier, said. "Not now. Honor, justice, loyalty, pride: None of these words have any meaning now ... We've destroyed their country," he said of the Iraqis. "We've turned it into a hellhole."

Nation cringes as the worst president ever continues long, painful slog to the end
George W. Bush Is Dead To Me »
Mark Morford / SF Chronicle
... The more staunchly conservative of the two (republicans) even went so far as to say he was so embarrassed and humiliated by this president, by this administration, so appalled at all the war atrocities and the wiretapping and the misuse of law, the fiscal irresponsibility and the abuse of the lower classes and the outright arrogance, that if the Dems could somehow produce a decent moderate candidate with a brain, he'd have zero problem switching allegiances and voting for him. Or her.

The need to know: No questions,
no dissent in our endless war

Paul Scott / Minneapolis Star Tribune
The outrage currently directed at the Times should be directed at Bush and the congressional Republicans who are now preparing the American psyche for the raiding of newspaper offices by federal marshals. They used to intimidate the president's opponents with spin, but that stopped working, so now they need to raise the fear of jail and death. Just as they always do in failing governments intolerant of criticism and contemptuous of the press.

The Treason Card »
Paul Krugman
Over the last few months a series of revelations have confirmed what should have been obvious a long time ago: the Bush administration and the movement it leads have been engaged in an authoritarian project, an effort to remove all the checks and balances that have heretofore constrained the executive branch.

Much of this project involves the assertion of unprecedented executive authority - the right to imprison people indefinitely without charges (and torture them if the administration feels like it), the right to wiretap American citizens without court authorization, the right to declare, when signing laws passed by Congress, that the laws don't really mean what they say.

But an almost equally important aspect of the project has been the attempt to create a political environment in which nobody dares to criticize the administration or reveal inconvenient facts about its actions. And that attempt has relied, from the beginning, on ascribing treasonous motives to those who refuse to toe the line.

Happy Independence Day
Put away the flags »
Howard Zinn / The Progressive
On this July 4, we would do well to renounce nationalism and all its symbols: its flags, its pledges of allegiance, its anthems, its insistence in song that God must single out America to be blessed ... These ways of thinking – cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on – have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of power.
Don't fly the flag today. Burn it! »
Doug Thompson / Capitol Hill Blue
America today is a hypocrite, a nation driven by lies, one that claims to spread democracy throughout the world when it has none to spread. America is a paranoid police state, a hoard of frightened citizens controlled by a fanatical government who feels the need to watch and monitor its populace 24/7.

Taxpayers in California alone have paid some $53 billion for the cost of war in Iraq.

The same amount of money could have provided a four year college education for 2,620,031 students (who might be able to figure out a way out of this mess) ... more than enough money to cover all of the current students with plenty left over for a lot more.

Bush administration officials and members of Congress put off maintenance and procurement expenditures to keep down the war's price tag ...

comment: You could fix a lot of potholes every single month for that kind of money ... or retrofit every California school twice a month ... fund 500,000 four year college educations every month ... provide health insurance for a year for 4 million people every month ... instead we're just pissing it away, terrorism is as high as it's ever been and Osama Bin Laden is still alive.

... and tracking the billions of dollars that flooded into a war zone in the wake of the U.S.-led invasion has proved difficult, too. Nearly $100 million in reconstruction money is unaccounted for. The ultimate price of a slowdown in Iraq's reconstruction could be steep. U.S. strategy here is based on the premise that jobs and prosperity will sap the strength of the insurgency and are as important as military successes in defeating terrorists.

While the 9/11 “My Pet Goat” episode was certainly illuminating, it’s not certain what might have worked out better that day had the president dropped the book and taken action. But his failure to grab the reins in the hurricane catastrophe for three days this week probably doomed hundreds, or more, to death. This is not mere incompetence, but dereliction of duty.

FEMA chief Michael Brown was so out-of-it that he didn’t even know about (more than) 10,000 evacuees living and dying at the Convention Center, even after they had received wide TV coverage for a solid day. The next day, Bush greeted him with: Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job.
